Website redesign for a small but passionated festival : Migennes Collector
Do you know the city of Migennes? It is a small city in Burgandy, France. Yet the festival I am going to talk about : “Migennes Collector” is not linked with wine even if the area is packed with vinyards. I give you a little clue :
Migennes Collector is actually made by a small team of passionated and dedicated people who love pop culture for people who love pop culture. Especially the SF-nerdy side of it (Star Wars, Harry Potter, Marvel etc)
Once a year they organize a meetup for fans and they actually manage to attract famous guest-stars from major movies and make them deep-dive into the French countryside. This year (2020) they have Devon Murray from Harry Potter and Mike Quinn from Star Wars coming :
If you recognized them it means you should go to Migennes Collector!
The goal for me was to rethink entirely the actual website of the event and design new screens for mobile and desktop, in responsive.
In order to begin the creative process I first dived into the actual website, facebook page and youtube channel of the event:
The website is very simple, it is a wordpress, which is logical from a non-profit small festival but I could get the “spirit” of the event with the actual logo and discover a huge community of fans and cosplayers (check above if you don’t know what is Cosplay and you speak french ;) )
The beauty of this festival is exactly about this : passionated people sharing a good moment together every year… and it works :
After my researches the key words inspired by the event are :
After browsing for a while I came up with an image that would remind me af the event and its associated key words :
Purple, in the history and meanings of colours, is associated with imagination, and mystery. That’s why it is a color that you very often cross in comics books.
Yellow is more associated with joy and energy. That’s how I decided to use this 2 complementary colors for my designs.
The next step for me was to get the right global “mood” about the event thanks to moodboarding. Like everything else in UX/UI you must test it a lot, that’s what I did and then I iterated :
The first version (image just above) was for me about imagination and fantasy but when I showed it to people they though about electronic music because of the neon and gradients.
My second version was closer to the spirit but it was too illustrative and people told me they just had the impression of reading a comic book and were distracted by the characters.
That’s why my final version of the moodboard was deconstructed to not look like a comic book board and I didn’t put too many illustration with famous character to focus only on the mood you could get : excitement, imagination, fun and cheerfulness
I was almost ready to start designing my wireframes but before I took a step back and decided to create a new design for the logo because the actual one was not in the same mood and the same colors I chose. My goal was to have the new logo being the basis of the redesign. And again after several iterations I obtained this logo :
It was in the same spirit as the actual one but with only drawing, flatten and made with 3 colors. The planet shape was still there like in the actual logo.
Thanks to all this design inspirations and the logo I created my style tile as a support for my design work :
All the info about font, colors etc were available in my style tide during the creation of the wireframes.
And finally, here is the prototype I created with the new design :
Thanks to test and feedbacks I managed to make the website more and more appealing and closer to the spirit I wanted to have by making it “rounder”, for example with the burger menu that evolved to a rounder shape compared to my first version :
I also wanted to give a cool and relax spirit and in that purpose the images with an overlay helped a lot :
I ran desirability test to see if I got the right spirit and I was happy to see that I actually got pretty close with these 5 adjectives that came out the most :
I hope that you now all want to go to this festival and as it will most probably be said there :
